Every Cedars upholstery project follows a structured process designed to keep the design intent, the cost, and the timeline aligned from first conversation to final piece. You sign off at each stage before we move to the next.

1. Brief & Consultation

We meet at your home, office, or our Doha studio to understand the piece you have in mind — for new commissions, how it will be used and where it will sit; for reupholstery, the condition of the existing piece and the look you want for the new one. We take measurements, photograph adjacent finishes, and review any references you have. Initial consultations within Qatar are complimentary.

2. Design & Fabric Selection

Our design team produces concept sketches, dimensional drawings, and 3D visuals where useful. We bring physical fabric, leather, trim, and stitch samples to your space — because how a velvet behaves under your room’s light is not something a digital swatch can show. You sign off on physical materials, not on a computer screen.

3. Quotation & Approval

You receive a detailed itemised proposal — frame, springs, padding, fabric, trim, stitching, and finishing shown line by line. Dimensions, fabrics, and detailing can be adjusted before you sign off. Production begins only after the contract and shop drawings are agreed.

4. Manufacturing & Hand-Building

The piece is built in our Doha workshop. Frames are cut, joined, and assembled in solid hardwood. Springs are tied, webbing is fitted, and padding is built up in layers. Fabric is cut with attention to grain and pattern matching, sewn, and fitted by hand. We share progress photos at key milestones — frame complete, springs tied, fabric fitted — so you see the piece take shape.

5. Delivery, Installation & Handover

Final QC inspection in the workshop, careful packing, delivery to your address, and installation by our team. Once the piece is in place, we run a snagging walk-through, address any issue, and provide care and maintenance documentation specific to your fabric and construction. Larger projects include a styling pass to make sure the piece sits well in the room.

Reupholstery vs. New Build vs. Full Package — What’s Right for Your Project?

Not every upholstery brief is the same. Understanding the three common project types will help you decide which suits your situation.

Reupholstery of Existing Pieces

We strip your existing piece to the frame, repair structural elements, replace springs and padding, and finish in new fabric. Best for: well-built pieces that have sentimental or design value, antiques, family heirlooms, and quality sofas where the bones are still good. Reupholstery is almost always cheaper than equivalent new construction — and far better for the planet — when the underlying piece is worth saving.

New Bespoke Pieces

We design and build a piece from scratch to your dimensions, fabric, and detailing. Best for: spaces where no existing piece will fit properly, signature commissions, full Majlis builds, and clients who want something genuinely made for them rather than chosen from a catalogue.

Full Furniture & Soft-Furnishing Package

Common Upholstery Mistakes to Avoid in Qatar

After more than a decade of upholstery work in Qatar, certain mistakes appear repeatedly — and almost every failed piece we’ve been asked to rebuild had one or more of these in its history. Here are the most common ones, and how a properly-run upholstery project avoids them.

1. Choosing the cheapest quote without checking what’s underneath

Two upholstery quotes for the same piece can vary by 60% or more — usually because the cheaper one has substituted softwood or chipboard for hardwood frames, serpentine wire for hand-tied springs, low-grade filler for high-density foam, and stapled finishing for hand-stitched detail. The piece looks identical at delivery and is finished in two years. A detailed itemised proposal that lists the frame material, spring type, foam density, and fabric specification protects you from this. Compare construction line-by-line, not bottom-line.

2. Approving fabric from a catalogue swatch

A 5cm catalogue swatch tells you almost nothing about how a fabric will behave under your room’s light, against your other materials, or after a year of use. Approving fabric on swatches alone is the fastest way to get a finished piece that doesn’t look like what you imagined. Always sign off on a full sample — at least A3 size — and ideally view it in the room where the piece will live.

3. Reupholstering a piece that isn’t worth saving

Some pieces are genuinely worth reupholstering; some are not. A frame made of softwood and staples cannot be rebuilt to a quality standard, and the cost of stripping, repairing, and reupholstering it can equal the cost of a new piece built properly. An honest upholsterer will tell you which is which, and we will. Reupholstery is the right answer when the bones are sound.

4. Underestimating fabric requirements for patterned or directional fabrics

Patterned, striped, or directional fabrics need pattern matching across cushions, arms, and backs — which means more fabric than a plain weave. Cheap quotes often calculate fabric on plain-weave assumptions, then surface a ‘variation’ once production starts. Proper quoting accounts for pattern repeat, directional matching, and waste from the start. We confirm fabric quantities at the quotation stage, not the production stage.

5. Skipping fire-rating compliance on commercial and hospitality pieces

Hospitality and public-area upholstery in Qatar must comply with Qatar Civil Defence (QCD) fire-safety regulations on foam, fabric, and barrier layers. Discovering a non-compliant sofa during a hotel inspection means stripping it down and starting again — with the operator covering the cost. Compliance has to be designed in, not added later.
